    119600 - Before/After Hours

    Designed for participants in Adventure Camp and Teen Trekkers, the Before & After Hours program offers working parents an option for full-day care during the summer. A supervised, low-key setting is provided. Activities range from organized games to board games, and crafts. Participants interact in mixed-age groups during before hours program.

    How to Register
    Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until filled. Registration deadlines are the Wednesday prior to the next week of camp. All registrations received after the Wednesday deadline will be added to the waitlist and notified if space becomes available.

    Registration deadline dates are listed below. Web registration will be available through 11:59 pm. In-person registration is available at the Lincoln Center through 7:00 pm and the Recreation Center through 8:00 pm. Phone Registration is not accepted.

    Spend the day visiting James Henry Breasted sites on the University of Chicago campus and exploring his impact on Chicago's Egyptian collections. The day begins with a guided tour of the Oriental Institute's Breasted Collections, led by Research Associate and Special Exhibits Coordinator, Emily Teeter. Then, visit Haskell Museum to view the Director's Office built for Breasted and walk over to Breasted's Hyde Park home. Bring comfortable shoes and a sack lunch. Trip begins and ends at the Downers Grove Museum.

    143035 - Horsemanship Instruction

    Learn the basics of horsemanship so you can interact safely and confidently around them. Long pants and closed-toe shoes with a one inch heel are required for riding. Helmets are provided. Please arrive for each session 15 minutes early to check in and meet the instructors. Participants must be 8 years of age by the first day of class. Attending all three levels of the Horsemanship Class are recommended in order to receive the full benefit of the program.

    Level 1: Beginner Horsemanship
    Students will learn about safety around horses, breeds, colors, anatomy and eyesight, and how to halter and lead a horse. On week two, the students begin balance exercises on horseback at the walk.

    Level 2: Intermediate Horsemanship
    Students will review and expand their skills learned in Level 1. There will be a demonstration by our AKF youth and amateur riders on the different styles of riding. Students will learn nutrition, grooming and tacking and continue balance exercises at the walk and trot.

    Level 3: Advanced Horsemanship
    Students continue to review and practice all of the skills learned in Level 1 and Level 2. At Level 3, the students "take the reins" and learn basic control and steering at the walk and the trot. Students receive an AKF T-shirt during this level.
